BESEL

BESEL, S.A.

BESEL was founded in 1984. The company has since gradually oriented its organizational and legal structure to the needs of markets for new technologies, particularly in the field of energy and environment. The alignment of its Engineering, Consultancy and R&D departments have made BESEL a reference company with solid prospects for growth at the national and international levels. Graz

City of Graz

With 240,000 inhabitants, Graz is the second largest city in Austria. It is the capital and the cultural, economic and university centre of the Austrian province of Styria.
The City of Graz has actively supported the conversion of the bus fleet of its public transport company towards using biodiesel: since 2005 100% of the bus fleet runs on biodiesel.
The city of Graz has also developed a collection scheme for waste cooking oil - from restaurants and households. This waste cooking oil is converted to Biodiesel in a nearby plant, which was the first biodiesel producer in Austria (started in 1986). The City of Graz started to extend biodiesel usage toward its own fleet - staff cars, cleaning fleet, service cars etc., and plans to actively promote the usage of biodiesel by the general public in a special dissemination package.
The city of Graz is responsible for task 4.2 Guidance Fuels and Refuelling Logistics

GVB

Public Transport for Graz

The Grazer Stadtwerke Verkehrsbetriebe AG (Public Transport Company of Graz) are the largest provider of public transport services in Graz. The fleet includes 61 trams and 142 buses. Presently the GVB employ 412 drivers.
In the year 1994 the GVB started a pilot test of three years to use pure biodiesel for Public Transport in Graz. Two buses were adapted for the use of biodiesel – the biodiesel was produced on the basis of locally collected waste cooking oil. Emissions were monitored by the Graz Technical University. The test was a great success: costs and emissions could be decreased, conversion turned out to be without grave problems. The scheme has since then by steadily extended – monitored within the framework of the EU-projects of CENTAUR and TRENDSETTER. The number of biodiesel buses in the fleet of GVB steadily increased and has reached the 100% mark in 2005. GVB will contribute to sugre with all its expertise gathered with this unique experience. This comprises in house workshops for fleet owners willing to switch to biofuels but also site visits at the premises of GVB in Graz.
