 Background

Landskrona is a former industrial city with 27.000 inhabitants in the south of Sweden.
By End of 2002 the Trolley-Bus-project started with the erection of the catenary system. In August 2003 the first trolleybus set into motion. 39 years after the last Trolley Bus was put out of operation in Sweden.
 Implementation

Fleet and Route Characteristics
The 2-axle low floor trolleybuses are of the type Solaris/Ganz Trollino 12. The 12m buses having a capacity of 70 passengers. Each are operating the same line, which connects the rail station with the city centre.
Three buses were procured for a daily operation. The line has a lenght of 3km (one tour 6km) and has only 160 poles because of the unilateral connection used in most cases for both directions (4 cables for 2 catenaries).
Experience
Each trolley bus operates in average 65.000 km/year
After three years of operation the three buses still run without changing the batteries.
Decision Process/Reasons
The decision towards a zero emission operation had been challenged because of the need for overhead lines and potential visual effects, but the practical experience has verified the decision. Having no heavy vehicles with PM, NOx and noise emission in the city centre is an essential aset.
Reductions
The trolley buses use only "green" power = waterpower. The City pays a little bit extra to buy "green" power only.
Compared to diesel buses the emission is reduced by 180,000 kg CO2 1,300 kg NOx and 18 kg particulates per year.
The energy consumption is calculated at 60% less than diesel operation.
